Perspective Views of the Interior Space :
A major challenge of this project is the REUSE of a former PECO Energy electric substation
building, a concrete framed one tall story and deep basement building constructed a half story
above the sidewalk. In addition to environmental considerations related to lead paint,
abandoned equipment and chemical residue.
This presentation demonstrates a design approach to the existing building that makes it
comfortably accessible for persons in wheelchairs in a way that it appears that it was originally
designed that way. We carved out a section of the first floor which allows the flooding of
daylight from large windows with southern exposure to allow filtered sunshine into a deep
multileveled basement area. Special planning consideration was given to building systems in as
much as the basement floor was below City drainage and water service.
